Answers to frequently asked questions:
Q: What is shea butter?
A: Shea Butter comes from the African karite nut. Similar to cocoa butter, but softer and creamier. Shea butter is said to have healing properties and has been used for centuries by the African medicine men to heal dry and aging skin.
Q: Oil is oil, right?
A: Not at all! Every oil has a different chemical make up and different uses. Here is a brief description of the oils we use, without getting too technical!
Almond Oil (Sweet): This medium weight oil contains several vitamins and minerals. It is frequently used by massage therapists because of its nutrients.
Apricot Kernel Oil: A light but, rich oil that is said to be beneficial to sensitive, aged, or very dry skin.
Avocado Oil: An extremely therapeutic oil high in many vitamins and fatty acids. It is reputed to have healing properties for aging skin and scarring. It penetrates very well and that's why we use it in our lotions!
Castor Oil: A heavier oil that draws moisture into skin (humectant), rich in fatty acids.
Cocoa Butter: A butter that smells like chocolate! How can you go wrong with that?! It has long been used on very dry skin and is said to provide protection from the sun as well.
Emu Oil: The new wonder oil in the world of cosmetics and toiletries! It is said to have anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial properties, as well as the ability to heal eczema, psoriasis, and scar tissue. It is also said to provide a natural SPF. It won't clog your pores, is hypo-allergenic and penetrates multiple layers of skin! All I can say from personal experience is that it is one of my favorites!
Grapeseed Oil: An extremely light, penetrating oil that is rich in vitamins.
Jojoba: Not really an oil, but, a liquid wax that is the closest to our skin's natural sebum (oil). It penetrates the skin very quickly.
Olive Oil: It's not just for cooking! Olive oil draws outside moisture into the skin while still allowing the skin to breathe!
Vitamin E: This vitamin is an antioxidant, used to keep oils from becoming rancid. It's also an antioxidant for your skin!
Q: What are essential oils? Why am I hearing so much about them?
A: These oils are distilled from plants, flowers, woods, and seeds. They have a variety of purposes including, aromatherapy and holistic healing. I use them because they simply smell heavenly. These are the oils that actually smell like the botanical from which it's extracted. Opinions vary on their healing abilities, but personally, these oils are my favorites.
You're hearing more and more about these oils because of the increased popularity of aromatherapy. According to aromatherapists, only true essential oils will give you the benefits of aromatherapy.
Q: Why are handmade soaps better than the soaps I can get at the store?
A: Most store bought soaps aren't REALLY soaps at all. They are mostly made of detergents and surfactants, and filled with artificial perfumes. For people with sensitive skin, excema, allergies and psoriasis, these chemicals can spell trouble. Irritation, dry itchy skin can result from them. My handmade soaps are made with several wonderful oils (see above listing) that are saponified (made into soap) and scented with essential oil, herbal extracts, herbs (grown in my own garden without herbicides or pesticides) and cosmetic grade fragrance oils. I do not use the detergents or surfactants.
